As students grow older and progress through their high school careers, more opportunities present themselves. An opportunity of service has been noticed by two Hermann High School seniors and they took it upon themselves to become more involved while helping their community.
Colt Engemann and Greg Bader, both Seniors, are members of the Rhineland Volunteer Fire Department. Both of the boys take part in all that the department has to offer, whether it is going to fire calls or helping work local fundraisers.
“The best part is being able to save lives,” Bader said. “But the worst, is sliding down a ladder for the first time with no hands and feet. You put your gear on, and do all that, and you bear hug [the ladder] all the way to the bottom.”
For Bader, being apart of the fire department is a family affair. When asked what inspired him to be a part of the fire department, Bader responded, “My dad and my uncles.” Bader also is considering taking his interest in fire fighting to the next level, possibly working one day in a larger city to fight fires.
When asked if both of them would continue being a part of the department for the rest of their lives, both nodded almost immediately.
“It makes me feel like I am giving back to my community and helping the ones that I love,” Engemann answered.
For those considering joining their volunteer fire department, the boys had some words of advice.
“It’s a lot of hard work and dedication, but it is always worth it in the end.”
