On the brisk morning of November 11th, 2016, the Hermann High School DECA hosted the annual Veteran’s Day Assembly. Assisted by the Hermann High School Kitchen staff and FBLA club, veterans were treated to breakfast and had a chance to socialize with peers and donate to the Wall of Honor in memory of themselves or another veteran. The Wall of Honor raised over $250 according to DECA president, Tessa Eldringhoff, with the proceeds helping out the local Hermann VFW organization.
After the breakfast, the student body and guests went to the gymnasium and enjoyed music performed by the Kammerchor, under the direction of Mr. Dell, and the band, under the direction of Mr. Sachs. After the musical performances, veterans and guests listened to speeches by State Representative, Justin Alfermann and superintendent, Dr. Tracy Hankins.
“I believe the speeches were very nice. They helped contribute to the assembly, and everything seemed to go very smooth,” DECA sponsor Mr. Wunderlich said.
Justin Reynolds closed the assembly with the symbolic ‘Taps’. As the guard retired the colors, the crowd stood reverently in respect for those who lost their lives.
“I believe the assembly went very nice. The students were all well behaved and everything seemed to go smoothly. All the speakers were good and helped contribute to the event,” Wunderlich added. “The veterans seemed to love it and we got a lot of good community feedback from the event. It’s an event that gives back to both the community and to the high school.”
