Hank's Hope

“Would you save your best friend’s life?”

In today’s society, mental health is a prominent topic. Depression and suicide rates are rising throughout the United States and people are starting to take a stand. Retired police officer, Rod Tappe, is doing just that. A former school resource officer at Union High School, Tappe lost his sixteen year old son to suicide in 2013. Since then, Tappe has started giving presentations to schools and communities about the importance of mental health. His presentations start off with a simple question:

“Would you save your best friend’s life?”

Tappe’s presentation at Hermann High School revolved around his own life and was full of information and statistics, while focusing on mental health awareness, suicide prevention, and self esteem. Tappe left students and parents with a thought lingering in the back of their minds:

“Would you save your best friends life by speaking up about mental illness?”
